Home heating oil prices have risen sharply in Spring 2010 which is always bad news for every home using heating oil in Wexford and beyond. As with all open markets, a combination of World events can adversely affect the price of one of the fast becoming scarce commodities- the following are normally the largest influencing factors:
- Currency movements (particularly Euro/Dollar)
- OPEC production statements or confirmations
- Adverse weather
- Speculators
- International Political events
- Taxation in different jurisdictions

All of the above mean that the price of oil moves minute by minute on the open market so trying to predict future market prices is as precarious as going to Cheltenham races with a box of pins trying to find a winner!!
Billions are won and lost on a daily basis by the so called oil trading experts so the average house holder trying to guage the optimum time to purchase a fill of home heating oil can only rely on pure undiluted luck.
A direct result of price movements on such a frequent basis is that it is IMPOSSIBLE for any 1 provider to be the cheapest on the market all the time- for example if company A is empty of stock today and he buys 1million litres at 60c per litre and the price falls to 57c per litre 3 days later when his competitor company B luckily becomes empty then how does company A compete with company B on day 4?
Answer is he can’t as company A has to sell his product for at least what he paid for it – unless he likes making losses.
With 100’s of importers, distributors & sub distributors operating within Ireland pricing Vs stocking issues such as this ensure that it is impossible to be with the cheapest supplier all time- no matter how many calls you make for quotations.
Like the old story of too good to be true- if you find that one supplier is completely out of step with competitors locally then you need to consider other issues. With margins of approx. 5-7% gross profit associated with oil distributions any quote of more than €20-€30 less than norm should be subjected to queries such as:
- Is it branded quality product which is being supplied
- Is there a calibrated meter system on the truck which will measure EXACTLY the amount that actually goes into my tank (rather than just a written docket)
- Maybe he is just a nice guy!!!
What is certain in Ireland is that an impending carbon tax of approx. 4.3c per litre (inc. VAT) is being levied from 1st May 2010 which was issued in the last Government Budget. This effectively means that 1,000l of kerosene will most likely cost €43 more on the 1st May 2010 than it will do 31st March 2010. It is expected that there will be a stampede to fill tanks just prior to this deadline so we would advise all customers to order at least 7-10 days in advance to ensure that suppliers can logistically get to them in advance of May 1st.
Be careful those suppliers who refused to sell kerosene to their customers in Dec 2010 prior to the budget as this carbon tax was expected at that time, when some suppliers hoarded their stocks hoping to sell them on at the signifigantly higher price. Adamstown Oils t/a J&M Oils did not part take in this despicable tactic and offered normal service to all existing customers and expects to do so again.
To help people to keep track of oil prices, and offer a much higher level of transparency we at Adamstown Oils t/a J&M Oils established this website www.cheaphomeheat.ie as one of the only online portals in Ireland which quotes a daily guaranteed price for kerosene, marked gas oil & motor diesel.
All customers & site visitors are invited to register on the homepage for access to our daily price lists where you can see (without the cost of a phone call) our prices for both 500l & 1000l of each product.
Orders can then be submitted online or over the phone.
We aspire to offer ongoing transparency in our pricing, top class Texaco branded oil products, and customer service of the magnitude which only a 25 year existing family run business can offer. Please feel free to contact us at anytime on 053 9240637 or order@cheaphomeheat.ie
